The Federal Reserve Essay -- Economics

To understand the purpose and role of the Federal Reserve System, we must first know the origin of the central bank of the United States. On December 23, 1913 President Woodrow Wilson signed The Federal Reserve Act. The primary purpose of the act was to make sure that a supply of money and credit would be available in the United States to meet banking demands by establishing Federal Reserve Banks which would hold the responsibility of supporting the credit structure during periods of financial strain. Other banks were expected to rely on the Federal Reserve for emergency cash and credit. Government and banking influence would select the management, primarily a board of directors chosen by banks. Supervision would be by the Federal Reserve Board. The intent in 1913 was to create eight to twelve centrally located district Federal Reserve Banks and national banks would be required to keep a part of their reserve with the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve would receive deposit s from the government and receive deposits and lend to member banks only. It took almost a year to determine the boundaries of the decided twelve districts and establish the twelve Reserve Banks (one of the four components of the Federal Reserve). Named after the city in which they are located, the twelve Banks are Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, and San Francisco. The Federal Reserve plays a significant role in maintaining the stability and liquidity (the ability to turn an asset into cash) of the financial system by working towards low and stable inflation and also strive to encourage growth in output and employment . Michelle Alexander Mass Incarceration - 1601 Words

Michelle Alexander who was born in 1968 is an associate professor of law at Ohio State University also a civil rights advocate and a writer. She is a highly acclaimed civil rights lawyer, advocate, and legal scholar. In recent years, she has taught at a number of universities, including Stanford Law School, where she was an associate professor of law and directed the Civil Rights Clinics. Alexander published the book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. In it, she argues that systemic racial discrimination in the United States has resumed following the Civil Rights Movements gains; the resumption is embedded in the US War on Drugs and other governmental policies and is having devastating social consequences.†¦show more content†¦Alexander asserts that this mass incarceration is not a response to an actual surge in violent crime among the African-American community, but a calculated effort to offset the gains made by the civil rights movementâ₠¬â€penalizing millions of African Americans behind bars, on probation or parole (mostly for non-violent offenses), and millions more with criminal records. Professor Alexander singles out the Nixon and Reagan administrations for particular criticism, for aligning the criminal justice system against the African-American community. â€Å"It’s easy to be completely unaware that this vast new system of racial and social control has emerged,† she says. â€Å"Unlike in Jim Crow days, there were no ‘whites only’ signs. This system is out of sight, out of mind.† In addition, according to Michelle Alexander, Mass incarceration is a system that locks people not only behind actual bars in actual prisons, but also behind virtual bars and virtual walls – walls that are invisible to the naked eye but function nearly as effectively as Jim Crow laws once did at locking people of color into a permanent second-class citizenship. The term mass incarceration re fers not only to the criminal justice system but also to the larger web of laws, rules, policies, and customs that control those labeled criminals both in and out of prison. Memory Project: Application to Learning Study Habits Memory is the capability to learn, retain, store and remember information from previous experiences. Memories are accumulated from prior experiences and recollected, which can influence change of behavior or thought. This ability can assist with learning and adapting to new experiences. Memory is essential to our lives. Without a memory of the past we cannot operate in the present or think about the future. We would not be able to remember what we did yesterday, what we have done today or what we plan to do tomorrow. Without memory we could not learn anything. Short-term memory is information a person is thinking of at that specific time, it is also known as working memory†¦show more content†¦Improving study habits may be accomplished by using both short and long term memory. In reference to (Morris Maisto, 2014), two types of short term memory skills that can be useful are rote rehearsal and chunking. These methods c an help hold more information in the short term memory, until they can be relocated to the long term memory. Rote rehearsal is repetition of information, such as using flashcards and saying them aloud. Another skill called chunking is the process of breaking down a large piece of data into smaller chunks to make them easier to comprehend and remember Long-term memory skills are also useful and include elaborative rehearsal, mnemonics and schema. Elaborative rehearsal is much like rote rehearsal except it is â€Å"linking new information in short-term memory to familiar material stored in long-term memory† (Craik Lockhart, 1972, p. 193). In simpler words this means trying to relate the given information to something you already know. For example, using the acronym PEMDAS which each of the letters stand for a step in mathematics that you are supposed to follow in order which are Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Adding, and Subtracting; Please Excuse My Dear Au nt Sally. Jesse Ventura I Aint Got Time To Bleed Essay I Aint Got Time to Bleed By Jesse VenturaJesse Venturas I Aint Got Time To Bleed is an autobiography about who he is, where he stands, and where he comes from. Ventura decided to run for governor and was elected in the state of Minnesota November 3rd 1998. He ran against Skip Humprhrey and Norm Coleman. He is the first member of the Reformist party to win an election for Governor in the history of the United States of America. He funded his campaign not by collecting money from special interest groups, but by accepting small donations from Minnesota citizens and repaying them using the Minnesota Political Campaign Refund Program. He knew in order for his campaign to work, everyone had to know that Jesse Ventura was running for governor. Since everybody doesnt listen to the radio or read the paper, he decided to focus his campaign on Television ads. Whenever he engaged in a debate he took only himself, no notes. His opponents were wearing suits and ties, he wore a Minnesota Timberwolves jacket and a pair of jeans. He dressed like the common man because he is the common man. On November third 1998 he won the election. James George Janise was born July 15, 1951, his name was not Jesse Ventura. Not until 25 years later when he changed his name to become ?Jesse The Body Ventura?. He grew up around local Minneapolis during the 50s and 60s and Graduated in 1969 from Roosevelt High. A few months after he graduated, his brother talked him into coming with to a navy recruiting office. They both walked out with Navy ID cards. The whole reason he joined the Navy was for one thing-the SEALs. Their chance finally came about five weeks into boot camp. After swimming 600 meters, doing as many pushups and sit-ups as they could in two minutes, then running a mile, he passed the screening test. For several more months they were trained as one of the elite. For the next two years he served in the military. In 1973, he finished serving in the Navy and joined a biker club called ?The Mongols?. After riding around with them for two years, he began to want more out of life, so he enrolled in a community college and hoped to play pro football. He worked out three nights a week with an ex-pro wrestler named Eddie Sharkey, who led him to an agent, and he began training to become a pro wrestler. After he was done training to become a pro-wrestler, he got a call from a Promoter asking him if he wanted to sign a contract- he did. He was then known as Jesse ?The Body Ventura? for the rest of his wrestling career. In wrestling he was always the bad guy and it was usually his job to loose. He played until his last match in 1986 against Tony Atlas. During his time as a professional wrestler he was assaulted several times, once by a 70-year-old lady, and then by a crazed fan with a hunting knife. He then received an offer to try out for a role in the newest Schwarznegger movie called Hunter. He got the role and flew down to Mexico the next day to begin filming it. The name of the film was later changed to Predator. During the filming of the movie, he became good friends with Arnold Schwarznegger and still is today. Ventura later went on to do the Running Man another film with Arnold Schwarznegger. Ventura got involved in politics while he lived in Brooklyn Park Minnesota. The city council was being run by a good old boy system and he was fed up. They were only concerned about re-election, and not the needs of the citizens of Brooklyn Park. So he ran for the election for mayor and won and took down the ?good old boy network?. Thats how he got involved with politics, and the victory at Brooklyn Park motivated him to run for Governor of Minnesota later on. .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 , .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .postImageUrl , .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 , .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191:hover , .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191:visited , .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191:active { border:0!important; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191:active , .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191 .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8d12da7ecd023cfb9a6d0a58cc34c191:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: It's a rainy day today!
